However, that is nothing compared to what racers had to contend with, driving in the world’s five longest auto races. They had to drive thousands of miles, over rough terrain in all kinds of uncertain weather.

In 1908, drivers gathered in New York City to participate in the Around the World rally. They traveled an estimated 22,000 miles and it took 169 days to complete. The race started in New York and ended up in Paris, France.

The London to Sydney Rally spawned a series of races that began in 1968. The first race started in the United Kingdom and ended in Sydney Australia and it ran for 7,000 miles. Another race was the 1970 London to Mexico World Cup rally, which started in the United Kingdom and ended up in Mexico City. This race covered 16,000 miles. In 1977, the ultimate race was also run from London to Sydney and covered a 17,500 mile route.

The Peking to Paris rally of 1907 began in Peking China and ended up in Paris France. Drivers covered an estimated 9,317 miles. A large percentage of this race was driven in areas that had no constructed roads.

The 2012 London to Cape Town World Cup rally covered an 8,600 mile route and took 29 days to complete. It started in the United Kingdom and ended in Cape Town, Africa. It was a nonprofessional endurance rally and street legal cars were used.

The 1992 Paris to Cape Town rally started in Paris, France and ended in Cape Town, Africa. The distance traveled was 7,722 miles long and the route spanned throughout most of Africa.

Born in Beloit, Wisconsin on March 25th, 1982, Danica Sue Patrick is the oldest of two daughters born to Beverly Ann and Terry Jose Patrick, Jr. Danica began racing go-karts at the age of 10 and after attending high school in Rockton, IL, she dropped out to further pursue her racing career. She attained her General Education Diploma.

Danica began racing for the Rahal Letterman team in 2002 in the Barber Dodge Pro Series, and later moving on to race in the Toyota Atlantic Championship in 2003. Patrick finished third in the series in 2004. Starting in 2005, Danica began racing in the IHL IndyCar Series. In 2005, Patrick became only the fourth woman ever to race in the Indianapolis 500, finishing fourth in the race. Also during 2005, Danica converted to Catholicism and married Paul Hospenthal. In 2007, Patrick announced she was leaving Rahal Letterman Racing for Andretti Green Racing.

Danica began racing a limited schedule for JR Motorsports in the NASCAR Nationwide Series in 2010, where she was teammates with Dale Earnhardt, Jr. Danica announced in 2011 that she was leaving the IHL IndyCar Series. At the conclusion of her 2011 Nationwide Series season, Danica had finished with four top-10 finishes, a pole win, and was 10th overall in series points.

At the beginning of 2012, Patrick announced that she would also be running a limited schedule in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series for Stewart-Haas Racing with GoDaddy.com continuing as her primary sponsor. The 2012 Sprint Cup season was difficult for Danica, as multiple wrecks were the norm rather than the exception during races she was involved in. In November of 2012, Patrick announced that she and her husband of seven years had decided to amicably divorce.

The 2013 season proved to be Patrick’s most successful yet as a professional. She became the first woman ever to win the pole for the Daytona 500. Danica also became the first ever female to lead a green flag lap during the Daytona 500. She ended up finishing the biggest race in NASCAR 8th, another record for female professional drivers.

In a world of professional racing, there are many circuits. The most prestigious car racing circuit is NASCAR. NASCAR is an acronym for National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing. It is one of the most popular sports in America today with new fans joining all the time.

NASCAR began in 1948 when it was founded by Bill France Sr. The first race was held in 1949 on a three-quarter mile dirt track at Charlotte Speedway. This was the predecessor to the Sprint Cup, one of three divisions of NASCAR racing.

NASCAR is actually an organization that sanctions racing all over the nation. There top three divisions are Sprint Cup, Nationwide Series and Camping World Truck Series. Although there are many types of NASCAR races, the most common one is the Sprint Cup Series. Generally, when people refer to NASCAR, they are speaking of this type of racing.

There are very strict guidelines when it comes to racing. Weight, length and horsepower are just a few of the many restrictions placed upon vehicles who want to race in this circuit. There are only a few makes and models allowed in this race. These American made vehicles include Ford Fusion, Dodge Charger, Chevrolet Impala and the Toyota Camry.

Certain annual NASCAR races have become very popular. People travel from all over the country to see races such as Talladega or the Daytona 500, both held in Florida. The Daytona 500 is the most famous race as it is the first of the year.

NASCAR racers battle for points throughout the year. The top point winner at the end of the season is crowned NASCAR champion. Past champions include Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr. Some past racers who are legendary include Dale Earnhardt (Sr.), Bobby Allison, Richard Petty and Darrell Waldtrip. Sadly, Dale Earnhardt Sr. lost his life in a NASCAR race as many accidents have occurred throughout the history of this high-speed sport.

This is not the case in other racing circuits. The winning driver of a Formula 1 racing season is determined by the number of points earned during each race. Formula 1 drivers are the best in their profession and they display their extraordinary skills in each race, in every country.
